In the modern digital age, a single slip up by one single programmer could spell disaster for tens, if not hundreds of millions of Americans. Social hackers and con artists are always on the lookout for new ways to take advantage of others, and in the age of information, it’s not hard.

Just by having access to your address and phone number, social hackers can begin to leverage their way into more personal numbers, such as your bank account or social security number—so when a world class cyber security team recently exposed a flaw in Verizon’s cloud, it left millions of Americans in full panic mode.

A misconfigured cloud-based repository, based out of Verizon’s storage headquarters in Israel, has recently been shown to be compromised, revealing the following information about nearly 14 million Americans:

  • Full name
  • Home address
  • Verizon pin codes
  • …and more

“Account details,” are also cited as part of the information leaked, which could include anything from the credit cards saved on file to your gmail passwords and contacts list. Unfortunately, this could leave millions of Americans vulnerable to identity theft.

Verizon uses a service known as Amazon S3, which is a bulk data storage provider launched by Amazon nearly a full decade ago.  So while many are blaming Verizon for the massive leak, it actually appears that it may be Amazon’s fault.

Despite this, it’s still uncertain who should take responsibility for this data breach, and what can be done to prevent it from happening again.

UpGuard reports:

“The data repository, an Amazon Web Services S3 bucket administered by a NICE Systems engineer based at their Ra’anana, Israel headquarters, appears to have been created to log customer call data for unknown purposes; Verizon, the nation’s largest wireless carrier, uses NICE Systems technology in its back-office and call center operations.”

“In addition, French-language text files stored in the server show internal data from Paris-based telecommunications corporation Orange S.A.—another NICE Systems partner that services customers across Europe and Africa.”

If you have Verizon, it may be time to call your provider’s number and inquire as to whether or not your information was leaked. It may also be time to switch phone providers, as the cellular technology conglomerate is known for outsourcing jobs to sketchy, third party vendors.

“NICE Systems’ history of supplying technology for use in intrusive, state-sponsored surveillance is an unsettling indicator of the severity of this breach of privacy,” UpGuard reports.

“This offshore logging of Verizon customer information in a downloadable repository should be alarming to all consumers who entrust their private data to major US companies, only to see it shared with unknown parties.”
