According to the latest Remington poll provided to Real Clear Politics, Donald Trump has opened up a five point lead on Hillary Clinton in Ohio, a must-win swing state for Republicans. How he is doing it will surprise many.
Trump is pulling in his usual demographics: white male voters, as well as voters 40 and over. That, however, is not why he is pulling away in the Buckeye state. Trump is winning because he is over-performing with voter blocs he usually struggles with, particularly women. In fact, Trump and Clinton are running almost even for the female vote in Ohio, with Clinton at 48% and Trump at an astounding 44%.
Trump is also doing better than expected among minorities. Trump is the choice of 19% of African-American voters. While this is not a very good number overall, many pundits expected Trump wouldn’t pass the 10% level of the black vote. Many Democratic leaders predicted Trump wouldn’t receive a single vote in some black precincts. That seems to be wishful thinking, and it is certainly bad news for Hillary, who needs the strong support of the black vote to win.
Trump is even pulling in 27% from Latino voters in Ohio, far above what many expected him to capture. Hillary is not inspiring Latino voters, it seems, as she only manages to get 53% of the vote, a low number for a Democrat.
