This is a story you haven’t heard anything about. Angry protesters have been screaming for President Barack Obama to “go home” while they launched gas bombs at police, this as the U.S President landed in Europe yesterday.
Obama’s visit to Athens, Greece, was supposed to be a grand farewell, but instead it has descended into chaos. Furious, angry rioters took to the street to demand he leave. Young people on motorbikes, carrying wooden clubs, and launching gas bombs tried to break a police procession to actually confront Obama directly.
Afterwards hooded left wing protesters took to the streets shouting “Yankees go home” and “we don’t need protectors” a reference to Mr Obama’s announcement that he thought Greece should be allowed off the hook when it comes to its spiraling national debt. Riot police firing tear gas were hurriedly brought in to disperse the crowd, some of whom were waving signs and carrying flares, as they marched towards the US Embassy. Molotov cocktails were also thrown at officers in the disruption. In a separate protest in the northern city of Thessaloniki, protesters also burned a US flag.
This is the first time that Obama has visited Greece during his eight years in office. Last time Greece was visited by a US president was when Bill Clinton was in office in 1999. This visit has been full of extensive street fighting between anarchists and riot police. Well, so much for the Presidents narrative that America would be loved all over the world. Eight years ago Barack Obama said he would restore U.S relations all over the world. Not exactly.
