Everyone can agree that fake news is a problem. Facebook’s new initiative to curb the spread of fake news, however, will only result in the censorship of conservative speech on the social media site.
Anyone who has spent any time on Facebook has seen how the rules can be abused to punish someone unfairly. Take the concept of Facebook jail. A number of conservative Facebook users, including Silence Is Consent staff members, have experienced 30 day posting bans because someone disagreed with their political posts and reported them.
Now, that same concept will be used to eradicate “fake news.” However, like “Facebook Jail,” the concept will likely also be abused by liberals. As a result, conservative news and viewpoints will be censored and marginalized on the site.
The fact-checking process will be done by groups including the Associated Press. ABC News, home to Clinton goon George Stephanopoulos, will also fact check, as will liberal media groups FactCheck.org and Snopes.
All liberals have to do is organize and target specific conservative news sources. With enough “complaints,” the conservative news site is now at the mercy of a “fact-checker,” who answers to no one. At that point, the news site can be labeled as a fake news source and censored on Facebook.
Facebook is taking new measures to curb the spread of fake news on its huge and influential social network. It will focus on the “worst of the worst” offenders and partner with outside fact-checkers and news organizations to sort honest news reports from made-up stories that play to people’s passions and preconceived notions.
The social network will make it easier for users to report fake news when they see it, which they’ll be able to do in two steps, not three. If enough people report a story as fake, Facebook will pass it to third-party fact-checking organizations that are part of the nonprofit Poynter Institute’s International Fact-Checking Network.
Here’s how Facebook is explaining the process. It’s a handy-dandy video that tries to put a bright spin on things.
The results here will be obvious. Conservative news will get the equivalent of a social media “scarlet letter.” A news article with a conservative viewpoint will only be available to view if the reader clicks a box to acknowledge that “experts” deem it fake. The credibility of the news story is destroyed before the reader even gets to see it.
“Liberty Belle” from Fury News nails the opportunism at play here. This is not about truth. It is about finding a means to end the flow of ideas and information to conservatives.
What is also troubling about this is that this is stomping on freedom of speech. No one is saying that there is not “fake news” out there, and those who wish to scam people, but this is not what they are doing.
The left had to concoct a way to stifle our conservative voices, and it looks like they found it. By silencing those that oppose the liberal agenda will no longer be able to be heard on sites like Facebook.
Can you see the potential for massive abuse? I would think that CEO Mark Zuckerberg would want to avoid the bad publicity that could get very ugly. It’s sad because we have this wonderful tool called Google which anyone can use to fact check anything.
It is also important to find news sites you can trust. Silence Is Consent prides itself with having a staff made up of actual journalists. When we have gotten a story wrong, we have removed the story from our site and apologized for the error. It’s part of our responsibility as a new source to stay committed to the truth. Silence is Consent is co-owned by a Fox News contributor, and we take pride in bringing you the truth, not an agenda, and not clickbait.
What do you think about the “Facebook Fake News Crisis?” Is it a real concern, or do you think this is just another liberal witch hunt? Tell us your thoughts in the comments!
