Disaster struck at the Oscars on Sunday night. Poor Warren Beatty, and Faye Dunaway were given the wrong card to read. The Oscars mix up happened when the results card for best actress was given to the presenters. They should have been announcing the Best Picture award, which would immediately have gone to Moonlight. Instead, they wrongly announced La La Land as the winner.
It was a crazy moment for the stars and producers of La La Land. When in the middle of their teary eyed acceptance speech they were stopped. The cast and crew were forced to hand their trophies to the stars of Moonlight. How awful! Watch for yourself!
This was a terrible end to an otherwise uneventful show. Most of the night went smoothly. There were a few jibes at President Trump. The Hollywood elite can’t help themselves. Some tried to bring in their politics, critiquing the President’s stand on enforcing immigration laws currently on the books. For the most part that gasping noise you heard was the horror as Beatty revealed he had incorrectly read La La Land as the winner. Good gosh!
Hours after the blunder, accounting firm PwC, formerly Price Waterhouse Coopers, who tally the Oscar results, and the Academy of Motion Picture Arts and Sciences issued a joint statement to apologize for the biggest Oscar screw up in the ceremony’s history.
The statement said:
“We sincerely apologize to Moonlight, La La Land, Warren Beatty, Faye Dunaway, and Oscar viewers for the error that was made during the award announcement for Best Picture.
‘The presenters had mistakenly been given the wrong category envelope and when discovered, was immediately corrected. We are currently investigating how this could have happened, and deeply regret that this occurred.
‘We appreciate the grace with which the nominees, the Academy, ABC, and Jimmy Kimmel handled the situation.’
While still on stage, Beatty blamed the epic mishap on being given the wrong envelope, saying he had seen the name Emma Stone from ‘La La Land’ when he opened his envelope.
‘I want to tell you what happened I opened the envelope and it said Emma Stone, La La Land and that is why I took such a long look at Faye and at you. I wasn’t trying to be funny. This is Moonlight for best picture,’ Beatty told the shocked crowd as he explained the blunder.
I think the best part of the night was when Jimmy Kimmel arranged for a group of unsuspecting tourists to be brought into the audience early in the evening. Their faces lit up, as they realized they were at the Oscars! I loved their enthusiasm as they took pictures with the likes of Nicole Kidman, and Denzel Washington. That was a delightful surprise for all.
