President Trump DECLARES WAR on the Freedom Caucus

Freedom Caucus

Stung by the failure to repeal and replace Obamacare, President Trump is taking aim on a surprising target: the conservatives in his own party. He is blaming the Freedom Caucus for the failure, and promises repercussions for failing to work together.

The unprecedented move could fracture an already split Republican party, between President Trump and the establishment, and conservatives who see no need to compromise their values just to pass legislation.

The move is also a surprise to many who thought President Trump was ready to change the focus away from the health care debate to an issue with greater agreement, like tax cuts. By continuing to focus on Obamacare, President Trump is extending an issue that is not a winner for him.

Trump targets the Caucus

Trump’s attack on the Freedom Caucus may also alienate many of his own conservative supporters, who felt the new plan was “Obamacare Lite” and wanted “repeal and replace” with a smarter plan. His veiled threat that Freedom Caucus members may face primary opposition from him did not go over well.

This morning, he tweeted “The Freedom Caucus will hurt the entire Republican agenda if they don’t get on the team, & fast. We must fight them, & Dems, in 2018!”

On Monday, President Trump made it clear the Freedom Caucus was on his mind. “The Republican House Freedom Caucus was able to snatch defeat from the jaws of victory. After so many bad years they were ready for a win,” he said.

Last week, before the vote on the American Health Care Act on pulled, Trump faulted the Freedom Caucus for failing to stop Planned Parenthood funding by supporting the bill. “The irony is that the Freedom Caucus, which is very pro-life and against Planned Parenthood, allows P.P. to continue if they stop this plan,” he tweeted.

The Freedom Caucus responds

Members of the Freedom Caucus, who have broad support among conservative Republicans and Libertarians, are pushing back against the President’s criticism. Rep. Justin Amash (R-MI), considered one of the most conservative members of the House, had a blistering response for President Trump. “It didn’t take long for the swamp to drain @realDonaldTrump. No shame, Mr. President. Almost everyone succumbs to the D.C. Establishment,” he tweeted.

Rep. Thomas Massie (R-KY), another well-respected member of the Freedom Caucus, also pushed back. “@realDonaldTrump it’s a swamp not a hot tub. We both came here to drain it. #SwampCare polls 17%. Sad!” he tweeted.
