ALERT

PUBLIC SERVICE ANNOUNCEMENT

Toyota has issued a major recall of one of their most popular vehicles, after it was discovered that an oil leak could cause rear wheels to lock up and cause drivers to lose control. The leaks could also may cause possible life-threatening fires.

The Toyota recall applies to 228,000 Toyota Tacoma pickup trucks, and is tied to fasteners that are not properly attached. A loose fasteners could cause an oil leak near the rear wheels. The oil leak could cause wheels to lock up and catch on fire.

CNet.com details the problem.

The problem is located in the rear differential. The orb of gears that sends power from the driveshaft to each rear wheel might leak oil. If a driver continues to operate the Tacoma while oil is leaking out, it could damage the differential, limiting forward motion and making a whole bunch of noise.

In a worst-case scenario, enough oil may leak out to where the differential will seize, which can cause a loss of control. That will obviously increase the risk of injury, which is a big ol’ no-no as far as vehicle operation is concerned.

To remedy the issue, Toyota will inspect each affected vehicle. If there are no leaks, technicians will re-tighten the fasteners in question. If there’s a leak, Toyota will install new fasteners and a new rear differential carrier gasket. Finally, if the differential has suffered damage already, Toyota will replace the whole thing for free.

Owners will be notified by first-class mail starting in mid-June.

Here is the full Toyota recall notice.

Toyota Motor North America, Inc., announced that it is conducting a safety recall of certain Model Year 2016 and 2017 Toyota Tacoma vehicles in the U.S. Approximately 228,000 vehicles are involved.

The involved vehicles have rear differentials that may leak oil. If a vehicle is continuously operated in this condition, the rear differential could become damaged, which can result in noise and reduced propulsion. In some cases the rear differential could seize, resulting in a loss of control of the vehicle and increasing the risk of a crash.

Toyota dealers will check the rear differential for any oil leakage. If no leaks are found, all fasteners will be re-tightened. If leakage is found, the rear differential carrier gasket will be replaced with a new one, and new fasteners will be installed. If rear differential components are damaged, the rear differential carrier assembly will be replaced with a new one. This remedy will be at no cost to customers. All known owners of the involved vehicles will receive a notification by first class mail starting in the middle of June.
