Seattle Mayor, Ed Murray, has recently decided to start taxing diet soft drinks, because wealthier white people drink them.
The tax is meant to fund the education of minorities, but it seems like it’s just an attack on middle class white folk. According to The Seattle Times, staff at the mayor’s office studied how the tax would impact their city, and found that a tax on non-diet sodas would disproportionately target minorities.
The tax was initially just supposed to be on sugary sodas, because they’re unhealthier than diet sodas, but now, it seems that Seattle is changing their tax policies to target “privileged” white people:
“The changes were recommendations that emerged when staff from the mayor’s office and the office of Council member Tim Burgess studied disparate impacts the tax could have on people with low incomes and on people of color, according to Murray.”
“That work involved conversations with community advocates, public-health professionals and business owners, according to the mayor. After Murray’s initial announcement, some suggested the exclusion of beverages with artificial sweeteners would be unfair because affluent white people tend to consume more diet drinks.”
One question that should be posed is, why are we taxing people for choosing healthier options? When people choose to consume diet sodas, they’re making a healthier decision than consuming full-sugar sodas, so why does the mayor of Seattle want to tax healthy decisions?
Many would say that it’s because the mayor isn’t trying to do something good—he’s just virtue signalling. In other words, he doesn’t care about health or education, he’s just following the modern trend of cow-towing to minorities, to appear as some altruistic crusader for social justice.
The facts beg to differ, however. If Ed Murray is trying to come off as a good person, he’s not doing a very good job. Just a month ago, he was accused of sexually abusing a teenager addicted to crack cocaine, for amounts of $10 and $20.
The Seattle Times reports:
“A 46-year-old Kent man sued Seattle Mayor Ed Murray on Thursday, claiming Murray ‘raped and molested him’ over several years, beginning in 1986 when the man was a 15-year-old high-school dropout.”
“The lawsuit in King County Superior Court, filed under the man’s initials, ‘D.H.,’ alleges Murray sexually abused the crack-cocaine addicted teen on numerous occasions for payments of $10 to $20.”
“ ‘I have been dealing with this for over 30 years,’ the man, now sober for a year, said in an interview with The Seattle Times. He said he was coming forward as part of a ‘healing process’ after years of “the shame, the embarrassment, the guilt, the humiliation that I put myself through and that he put me through.’ “
Mayor Murray has denied the allegation, but questions still remain—is this “white privilege tax,” just an attempt to ease his troubled conscious? Or is he just so insane that he thinks it’s okay to specifically target a certain race?
Either way, taxes that purposefully target any race are obviously racist, and should not be put into action. Our legal system specifically prohibits this type of policy, but if too many social justice warriors get into positions of power, this may change.
