Bravery is doing the right thing, even when you know it will hurt you. Meryl Streep is not brave. She preaches to the choir. Singer Joy Villa is brave, and all she had to do was wear a Donald Trump dress to the Grammys.
Villa (also known as Princess Joy Villa) is a singer, actress, and self-professed vegan and feminist. She has made a name for herself by wearing outrageous dresses to every Grammys. Last year, she wore a dress made up of recycled materials. It won her plenty of attention and praise at the time.
This year, she wore a Donald Trump dress inspired by his “Make America Great Again” campaign yard sign. It was designed by Andre Soriano, a fashion designer and immigrant.
One wonders how they will react now. Some Twitter users questioned her blackness. Others just called her a traitor.
Regardless, Villa took it all in stride. “Sometimes you just gotta be free to express yourself. Thank you to all of my supporters and fellow believers. Life is about living free and loving it. Be your beautiful selves tonight,” she wrote on her Instagram.
