NFL players are currently caught in a recent controversy, after dozens of them have refused to stand during the national anthem. While they claim it’s to point out “systemic racism,” many conservatives believe it’s just outright disrespectful. One man however, took drastic measures to express his dislike of the flag-protesting NFL players, and it’s shocking both the players and the fans alike.
Veterans and conservatives have protested the NFL in many different ways. Some have thrown away their sports gear, others have refused to watch anymore games at all, and a few have even made a public display of lighting their season tickets and NFL gear on fire. All of this completely pales in comparison to what this one disgruntled Jaguars fan managed to pull off.
Terry Smiley had previously loved attending football games. Like many Americans he would tune in to the Monday Night Football broadcasts and root his favorite team on, but after Smiley’s beloved Jaguars began protesting the national anthem, he decided to send a big message.
Action News Jax reports that the Green Cove Springs man took his beef to the skies on Sunday, after paying a professional pilot to fly a plane-towed banner, urging Americans to ban the NFL.
At 1,000 feet, you could read the statement on the plane-towed banner saying, “Be American. Boycott the Jags and the NFL.”
Terry Smiley had the message printed on a banner that was flown above EverBank Field before the Jacksonville Jaguars’ game against the Los Angeles Rams.
This all-American sport is dividing fans after some NFL players took a knee during the national anthem.
“I am asking people to boycott the football games. I don’t watch it on TV,” Smiley said.
People’s feelings about politics and football seem to bleed together on the turf.
“People need to realize the true message that they’re trying to send,” Jaguars fan Jay Crossman said.
Smiley said he was disgusted by the Jags players who knelt in London. Now, he’s taking a stand, making his voice be heard.
Silence is Consent previously reported on the surprisingly large number of Jaguars players that have protested the national anthem—from cornerback Jalen Ramsey to defensive end Calais Campbell, it seems that the new trend has struck a chord with the Jacksonville Jaguars.
“Do you believe in your country? Do you believe in ‘The Star-Spangle Banner?’ If you don’t stand up for it now, you won’t have it in the future,” Smiley said, echoing the thoughts of many less vocal Americans. As a former Jags fan, he hired a pilot to fly his banner over the stadium for a whole two hours, much to the chagrin of NFL players.
“I have a right to protest,” he said, adding that he would “protest it with bumper stickers, airplanes—whatever I got to do.” Many fans have rallied behind Smiley, particularly conservatives and veterans. Others however, have insisted that the players are kneeling for a greater cause: racial equality.
“They are taking it in a peaceful manner. They are trying to use their words and use their actions instead of taking it to violence,” one Jaguars fan said. “They have publicly stated that they care about veterans and the flag and that’s not what they’re kneeling against.”
Despite their claims, Smiley is determined to put an end to their protests. “We boycott them and we hit them in the pocketbook, where it [hurts] them…[and before long] we’ll have them on both of their knees,” Smiley added.
If you think that Smiley did an AMAZING JOB of protesting the NFL, please give this article a share! Thank you and God bless our flag and our national anthem.
