Details are emerging of a bizarre hit-and-run and police shooting in Miami that left a female Temple University student dead on Sunday. Pictures of the hit-and-run that put an officer in the hospital have also surfaced.
According to eyewitnesses, Cariann Denise Hithon, a 22-year-old Temple University student, had the look of a “crazed” woman when she ran a red light, hit several cars, and ran over a police officer who tried to stop her from fleeing. That caused a second officer to open fire on Hithon’s BMW, killing her.
One of the eyewitnesses said she appeared to be on drugs, an accusation that has not been confirmed. A male passenger who was with her in the car will likely be able to shed some light on the incident, but police have not released any details he provided.
Officer David Cajuso, the officer who was run down, was later released from the hospital and was not seriously injured.
Temple University student was shot and killed by police in Miami Beach on Sunday after she charged her car toward the officers, striking and injuring one — an incident a witness said “played out like a movie set.”
Cariann Denise Hithon, 22, was driving her black BMW when she crashed into several cars in South Beach, a popular tourist district, police said. Hithon ran the red light and was traveling “at some rate of speed,” police said. Michael Davis, who witnessed the chaotic scene, told WSVN Hithon repeatedly rear-ended cars.
“She rear-ended it, and after she rear-ended it, she drove off,” Davis told WSVN. “She actually drove off again and ran over a police officer, and after that, shots were fired.”
Other bystanders said they heard several shots fired before a crash. Hithon was rushed to the hospital where she later died of her gunshot wounds.
