Retailer Will DESTROY Unsold Guns Pulled After Parkland School Shooting

Dick's Sporting Goods

Rather than return them to the manufacturer, a major retailer will destroy the unsold guns it pulled from its shelves after the Parkland school shooting in February.

Dick’s Sporting Goods made the announcement today, following up on their decision to pull all guns from their shelves after the Valentine’s Day mass shooting at Marjory Stoneman Douglas High School in Parkland, Florida. 17 students and teachers were killed by Nikolas Cruz.

Gun rights supporters criticized the move, saying it unfairly demonized responsible gun owners.

The Daily Mail reports.

Dick’s Sporting Goods are destroying all unsold firearms that were pulled from the shelves in the wake of the Parkland shooting massacre.

The sports retailer announced back in February that it would no longer sell assault-style rifles at any of its stores following the shooting at Marjory Stoneman Douglas High School that left 17 dead.

The Pittsburgh-based company revealed this week that instead of selling the firearms back to the manufacturer, they were going to destroy them instead.

‘We are in the process of destroying all firearms and accessories that are no longer for sale as a result of our February 28th policy change,’ a Dick’s spokeswoman told

‘We are destroying the firearms in accordance with federal guidelines and regulations.’

The rifles will be destroyed at the company’s distributions centers before the parts are recycled.

Dick’s Sporting Goods would not reveal how many guns were being destroyed.

Following the deadly shooting, Dick’s also announced in February that they would be banning gun sales to any customers under 21 years of age.

Dick’s is already facing two lawsuits over the age restrictions.

In the weeks after the Parkland school shooting, Dick’s Sporting Goods has struggled to avoid negative publicity, especially after it was revealed that Nikolas Cruz bought one of his guns from the chain. It is not believed that he actually used the Dick’s gun during the shooting.

The changes came after Nikolas Cruz used a legally purchased AR-15 semi-automatic rifle when he opened fire at the Parkland high school.

He also purchased another weapon from Dick’s a few months before the February 14 incident.

Dick’s chief executive Edward Stack said at the time: ‘We have to help solve the problem that’s in front of us.’

‘Following all of the rules and laws, we sold a shotgun to the Parkland shooter in November of 2017. It was not the gun, nor type of gun, he used in the shooting. But it could have been,’ Stack said.

‘Clearly this indicates on so many levels that the systems in place are not effective to protect our kids and our citizens.

‘Gun violence is an epidemic that’s taking the lives of too many people, including the brightest hope for the future of America – our kids.’
