A 30-year-old man is under arrest, accused of killing his own grandmother because he was tired of caring for her.
The man reportedly was the only member of his family who looked after 81-year-old Helen Smith, who suffered from dementia.
On Sunday, the woman reportedly urinated on herself, and Smith became frustrated with her as he placed her in a tub. According to police, he hit her, knocking her unconscious. He then took a knife from the kitchen and sliced her throat, killing her.
He at first tried to blame the murder on an intruder, and then confessed to killing her because he “didn’t want her to live like this.”
Transgender activists online are upset that authorities are referring to Smith as a man, claiming he is transgender. His exact sexuality or preference is not officially known.

Chandler police say 30-year-old Brandon Smith is being held on suspicion of first-degree premeditated murder. It was unclear Sunday if he had a lawyer.
According to charging documents, Smith punched Helen Smith in the face first and she fell unconscious before he “decided to end her life.”
Police say Smith cut his grandmother’s neck with a kitchen knife when she was in the bathtub. He says she was suffering from dementia.
Officers called to an apartment complex about 3:30 a.m. Sunday found Helen Smith already dead.
Chandler is a suburb about 22 miles east of Phoenix.
