As speculation surrounds a possible Oprah Winfrey presidential run builds, her past comments are under more scrutiny.
Christians in particular are taking issue with what appears to be Winfrey’s wavering faith. Although she claims to be a Christian, she has made a number of statements that seem to contradict that.
In particular, comments she once made on her television show make many doubt if she believes in the divinity of Jesus Christ at all. In addition, as we reported earlier, Winfrey has made some decidedly un-Christian remarks, including calling for the old white people to die because they may be racist.
In a 2013 interview with the BBC, Winfrey said that entire generations “just have to die” to cure the problem of racism.
After Winfrey told the BBC’s Will Gompertz that she thought that racism has “gotten better,” Gompertz asked Winfrey if she thought the problem was solved.
Winfrey responded, “Of course problem is not solved. You know, as long as people can be judged by the color of their skin, problem’s not solved. As long as there are people who still, there’s a whole generation — I say this, you know, I said this, you know, for apartheid South Africa, I said this for my own, you know, community in the south — there are still generations of people, older people, who were born and bred and marinated in it, in that prejudice and racism, and they just have to die.”
In this undated video from her talk show, which appears to be from the 1990s, Winfrey doubts whether Jesus Christ is the only way to heaven, something that violates even basic Christian beliefs.
Here is the video.
In recent years, Oprah has also made statements that appear to say that her idea of faith leans more to a New Age belief system. In 2015, she said this:
“Everything that I am has come from my belief in that which I call God,” she shared. “My idea of what that is, is no longer a person out there or in the sky, but my belief in understanding that there was a force, a presence, a power, a Divine Entity, a being that loved me. And the very idea of being loved into being is what has kept me grounded, centered and strong.”
