USS The Deplorables petition

A petition on the White House website is urging the Navy to name its next warship the USS The Deplorables. The name is in honor of the patriots who elected Donald Trump President.

The idea may likely drive many liberals crazy. If the petition gathers 100,000 signatures by January 3, 2017, however, President Obama would have to respond to it. And THAT is reason enough to sign the petition. You can click right here to sign the USS The Deplorables petition. has the details.

U.S. Secretary of the Navy Ray Mabus has a penchant for doling out interesting and unconventional names for new warships, but a petition currently on the White House website wants the next major warship to be named something that may be too outlandish even for him.

The petition suggests that the next major vessel be christened “USS The Deplorables,” as the petition notes, “to honor those citizens who rose up to defend America and the Constitution from the globalists.”

The name is taken from a remark Democratic presidential candidate Hillary Clinton made on the campaign trail to refer to supporters of President-elect Donald Trump.

“You know, just to be grossly generalistic, you could put half of Trump’s supporters into what I call the basket of deplorables,” Clinton said at a rally in September. “The racist, sexist, homophobic, xenophobic, Islamaphobic — you name it. And, unfortunately, there are people like that. And he has lifted them up.”

Not everyone is a fan of the name.

One Navy veteran, however, doesn’t seem to be too keen on it, however. His objection is more about the meaning of the word rather than the people it represents.

“My gut reaction when I heard about this was, ‘Would you like to be a sailor deployed on a ship called the USS The Deplorables?’” David Winkler, director of programs at the Naval Historical Foundation, told “Do you think someone would really want to say, ‘Look at that ship out there – it’s deplorable?’”

Although the “USS The Deplorables” would be an unusual choice, the Navy has picked unconventional names before. The Navy recently named a ship after the late gay activist Harvey Milk, although Milk was a Navy veteran. However, he is known more his actions as an activist over his Navy career. The Navy also named a ship after Congresswoman Gabrielle Giffords. Giffords, however, has no Navy connections.
